ELA Centers

In the Writing Center students independently free write in their journals. They choose either a fictional or nonfictional sentence starter strip or picture and use that to jump start their writing. If time permits, students practice peer editing using various methods taught in class.

In the Retelling Center students work in groups to read a familiar book and use props to retell the story. If time permits, students are allowed to use their creativity and imagination to create new endings to the story.

In the Word Work Center students use various tools such as playdough, letter magnets, letter stamps, letter tiles, dictionaries, thesauruses, etc. to build words and practice certain language standards.

The first half of the Listening Center is devoted to reviewing power standards such as sight/vocabulary words, and practicing various phonics/ decoding skills flashcards with corresponding the audio. The other half of the Listening Center is spent with students participating in a read along with a book on their instructional reading level. If time permits, students answer questions about the book they read.

In the Game Center students work in groups to play board games, puzzles, and other engaging games to review previously taught skills.

The Technology Center is centered in the concept of Personalized Learning. Personalized Learning is instruction that is tailored to fit each individual student. I use programs like Scootpad, Moby Max, and Renaissance Place to assess students understanding of skills and offer practice to fill any educational gaps that may prevent students from mastery.
